Are the Wereknights Lost
Type: Side Quest
Region/Scope: Royal Palace / Aglarion
Overview
Recent events at Princess Athena’s coronation revealed that the so-called WereKnight Curse is not a natural affliction but a deliberate transformation inflicted by the new queen. Understanding the origin, mechanism, and possible reversals of this curse is now essential, as it directly threatens the kingdom’s remaining loyal forces.
This research is also personally important to Zane, who strongly opposes the idea of forcibly turning people into enforcers against their will. The existence of the WereKnights represents a violation of autonomy that he cannot ignore.
Objectives
- Determine how the queen creates wereknights.
- Identify whether the transformation is magical, infernal, or ritualistic in nature.
- Learn whether the curse is reversible.
- Seek potential knowledge sources that may help in breaking or resisting the curse.
- Understand the moral complexity of the curse, especially given recent evidence that some WereKnights may still act to protect civilians.
Role in the Story
- This side quest ties directly into the kingdom’s growing instability.
- It supports the party’s broader goals of resisting the corrupted crown and protecting civilians and loyal soldiers.
- Zane’s moral stance adds a personal dimension to the investigation.
- Wereknights now pose a widespread threat—but recent events suggest not all cursed individuals are wholly lost.
Source
- Coronation Event – Transformation witnessed directly during Session 6.
- Queen Athena – Apparent origin and controller of the curse.
- Signmonder – Expresses grief and responsibility for his transformed soldiers.
Notable Moments
Session 6 - Acquired
- Knights who knelt before the queen were immediately and violently transformed into armored werecreatures.
- The transformation appeared to be induced by Athena’s will, suggesting the curse is an extension of her corrupted power.
- At least two wereknights showed hesitation or reduced aggression when addressed by Harlekk, hinting that some part of their identity may survive the transformation.
Session 12 - Ongoing
- The party witnesses chaos in the city as multiple cursed guards battle monsters and protect civilians simultaneously—indicating the curse may not fully strip away loyalty or purpose.
- Zane notes this behavior and becomes even more determined to understand the curse, because it forces individuals into roles they did not choose, something he personally despises.
- Zane begins formal research in the Bastion’s library to search for any way to reverse or weaken the curse. No concrete breakthroughs occur during this initial effort.
- Signmonder expresses sorrow over the fate of “his men,” hoping they might be saved.
- These events together deepen the quest’s urgency and complexity, as the WereKnights may be unwilling victims still trying to do good despite their condition.
